Using XL1S as a webcam - Dont laugh
I was wondering if there was a way in which the xl1s could be set up as a webcam for monitoring a location from a remote location?

Yes, well, I know the GL2 can so I'm going to assume anything with firewire output is the same. You will need an OHCI compliant firewire (IEEE 1394) card in your PC, and have some WEB cam software. The rest should be in your XL1s manual.
It's not laughable, some people just want the best. Now if you bought a HD 24P Cinealta for a webcam, that would be funny! |

goto www.canondv.com they have some software that you can download that is suppose to make it see the camera. Who knows if it works. I couldn't get mine to work.

I use WebcamDV, take a look.
http://www.orangemicro.com/webcamdv.html I've looked at Canon's site before for DV software/drivers/something for Windows to recognize but to no avail...

it'd work with a Mac too
If you have iChat AV on both sides the XL1s-as-webcam would work.
But if you have a few extra bucks, there are tilt/pan/zoom webcams out there for Windows. I apologize for not recalling the links. Tilting, panning and zooming would be handy if what you're doing is monitoring your home. |

Canon's DV Messenger requires a Windows Messenger account set up through MSN in order to work properly (but it will let you use an XL1S as a webcam).

There is no solution that will allow me to use it on an apple computer.
Or is there..... |

If you try to use Virtual PC for the Mac it should work. I know that several programs work while running Virtual PC.

As they've said earlier, I believe iChat will work. Here's one program you might want to download and try. And here's another. And yet one more. And there's more there to choose from.
