on screen data - should it be there?
For the XL1, there's a button called EVF Display that you can push to remove a lot of data from the screen, but it doesn't remove some of it, such as whether or not it's paused or recording and whether or not it's in 16:9. I've read that you have to turn that stuff off with the remote control, but I tried it and it doesn't work. Yet we recorded some footage and played it back on the TV, and that info wasn't on the screen. Are some things supposed to be in the viewfinder when you record, or will they show up when it's transferred to computer?

The XL1 default is to place time code and mode in the analog video output stream during record mode, but not during playback mode. Use the "On screen" button on the remote to toggle this display on/off in either mode.
The EVF display is separate from the analog output (e.g., the composite video and s-video jacks). The EVF display is not recorded in the video streqam to tape or analog output, but some of the information that is potentially in the EVF display is also recorded as part of the data recorded to tape. If I recall correctly, the XL1s added a menu option to toggle this as well.
