Improve your XL H1 twice for a dollar!
I finally managed to get started on this simple little project: To improve the recorded sound from the onboard microphone on the XL H1.
1. Shake the camcorder and you will hear a rattling sound from the microphone holder! Not good to get on the tape while shooting. This noise is caused by the rubber isolators playing around inside the bracket. Cure: Remove the viewfinder. Remove the little screw at the underside of the mic bracket. Compress the rubber so it protrudes out. Glue them with silicon! Put enough silicon on the underside of the rubber. Assemble the part and tighten the screw. Put a rubber or other small piece between the mic holder and the bottom bracket to stretch the rubber isolators. Fill all gaps around both ends of the isolators with silicon too. While you are waiting for it to cure and have the viewfinder disconnected: Now it is time to use the dollar or Euro or whatelse you have. Get one O-ring. Mine is 2.5 mm thick and outside diameter is about 22 mm. I was tired of the viewfinder and microphone holder coming loose all the time making noise which directly affected the microphone. Screw out the four small screws from the front of the locking nut. Remove the square plate. Don't loose the spring and the little rod. Put the O-ring or gasket on the big thread between the locking nut and the square plate. Assemble. Now the locking nut gets some friction and the viewfinder will stay quietly in place. Two good improvements in my opinion for about a dollar! /Johan Last edited by Johan Forssblad; March 22nd, 2007 at 01:45 AM. |
