HDV vs SDI>Wafian/Kona/BM Decklink

I am starting a documentary and I am looking to shoot for a filmout. I have the H1 and want to know if the increased quality from the SDI to Wafian/Kona/Decklink is worth the added hassle (and $$) of tethering on-set to get D2D capture versus just shooting to HDV 1080 24f.

Anyone do a filmout to 35 from an HDV source?

How can you do a documentary tethered?

In a doc scenario, I would think that getting the right shot by not being tied down would be infinitely more important than gaining a measure of picture quality that your audience would never notice.

In other words, content over picture quality.

Matt,

View this thread to see our setup. I'll be posting more pictures footage, and comments about the ease/hassle of using it.

In a recent issue of DV magazine, John Jackman, a
dvinfo.net lurker, has a good article about doing a filmout
from the JVC100 and Waifan recorder. John also took some
shots using the Canon H1's HD-SDI output and found that
was MUCH better than the analog component out of the
JVC. The Waifan is fairly expensive and not all that mobile.

The lab you choose also has a great deal to do with good
final results. I think the lab he used has an Arri laser scanner.
