Since the XL H1 is a High Definition camcorder, it is neither NTSC nor PAL. Therefore you will find no such marking on the camera body. You're concerned about whether you're getting a 50i or 60i camera, so what you need to do is make sure that you purchase the camera from an authorized Canon dealer in your area. The resources on the Canon Italy site will greatly assist you with this (begin at this site: http://www.canon.it/Where_to_buy/index.asp). Avoid the grey-market internet box houses and you shouldn't have a problem. Hope this helps,

Gabriele,
I strongly recommend to follow Chris' advice.
But if you're offered an used camera either turn it on and look at the frame rates available (you probably want 50i/25F) or look into the battery compartment. In there the 50i version reads "Canon XL H1 E" (E for Europe, I guess).
Good luck!

I would go for a PAL version. If you need 60i/30F/24F you can always have Canon upgrade your camera for around EURO 500.
