im a new owner of xlh1 now doing my own trials, and trying to downconvert with the in camera procedure. My problem is that i cant activate the PLAYBACK STD and HD DOWN CONV options in VCR MENU in the camera, they are in grey colour (desactivated)
I have tried every combination of the other menu options but this are always desactivated.

Hi Fernando,
Look around here. I think Chris Hurd made a checklist what to look out for. It was about 10 things...
I encountered the same problem. Think I was not allowed to have the FireWire connected while trying to change the setting but I don't exactly remember what the solution was. This camera is overlocked (!) by some over ambitious engineer!
Good luck, just try any possible combination of the settings and buttons and some day; Jackpot!!; you have found the correct one! /Johan

Yes you need to do the settings before you connect the firewire. You also have to turn on the Firewire out seperately. HTH

Well...I just switch the H1 into a Camera mode, change the settings, and then switch back to VCR mode. That has always worked for me...and the items are never greyed out in camera mode. :)
