I have the XL H1 for a bit at DVinfo.net

Hey everyone,

I was able to receive an XL H1 for a little bit and am planning on doing some cool tests over the coming days. Anyone have any cool/killer settings I should try out? I'm just now getting into the manual and am going to replicate some stuff I've come up with on the Z1 and DVX100a.

Heath, 24f mode quick whip pans. Like do a Michael Jackson 360 spin. See how the codec holds up under stress.
Do the same with a 24p dv camera to compare i-frame with ibp-frame codecs.

Test some low light/ hight contrast shots out. For example, maybe an all black background with a person sitting in a chair with a hard light on their face hitting one side of the face only. I'd like to see the noise/hightlight capabilites of this baby. Thanks! =)

Also, please if you can I'd love to see some motion on camera with the camera being stationary. Perhaps a close-up pan following someone, on a tripod ofcourse.

Would love to see some clips showing the baseline operation of the H1.

Specifically, zoom range in 60i & 24F, especially in more challenging environments. Can you shoot something wide and then start to zoom in all of the way, especially something that doesn't have that much light to start with? I'm trying to get a final sense of how much drop off there is in the range as it goes from wide (f/1.6) to tele (f/3.5) for event work.

Also, if you have the ability to make a clip with deleberate manual iris changes, it would be incredible. That is, start taping something and then start rolling the electronic iris open & back down a number of stops. I understand that the iris adjusts electronically every 1/4 stop - I'd like to see how smooth, responsive, and noticable (or un-noticable) quick iris changes are.

If you have the ability to upload native .m2t's, it would be just incredible. I might get the credit card out a couple of minutes after I see these.

And one last request, give us some COLOR! All the footage as of yet from Elton has been crisp and clean, but lacked color with a passion. So please fiddle with some coloring and give us an idea of what 24F with some color can do, thanks. =)

Nothing so far--we did some re-shoots on a horror short shot with the Z1. Tomorrow and Monday are the big days. I'm sorry I can't invite anyone--I'm just going to be driving around town with Jon Fordham and then we're going into the Film School where I work.

I was also going to request that if you had a chance to display various gain settings, along with the other zoom/iris changes, that would be great. -3, 0, 3, 6, 12 - whatever.

I'd really like to see what this thing can do in a pinch for various scenarios in event work, and how the picture excels or suffers.

While shooting last night, I messed around with the gain settings and liked what I saw. I need to do it in a more controlled environment. The Z1's gain settings are clean up to 9 db, in my opinion.

Yeah - I've got a Z1 as well, and thought it did an amazing job with gain (9, 12, even 15db). Hate gain as much as anyone, but sometimes it's necessary.

Would love to see clips of the H1 at 6 & 12 db (I didn't think there was a 9db setting), in lower light scenario, through the focal range of the lens (wide to zoom), while rolling the iris open and closing it (to see if it's a smooth adjustment, or if the iris is 'steppy/blocky').

Basically trying to see or hear someone say - yeah - this thing even does well in a lower light scenario at 12db, through the zoom & the iris is smooth/responsive, etc... I want to use it for event work - otherwise I may just wait for the Infinity. April is coming quick...
