Audio enigma? at DVinfo.net

It was suggested to record two tracks, one higher and one lower which gives the option of selecting the better track. A brillant idea and I thought I would give it a try tonight.

With my xl2 that was easy but capture had to be made in scenalyzer which was just fine.

It appears to me that I can't record in HDV, brreak it down to twelve bit tracks, which then negates recording my wireless on one track and regular audio on the other.

That does not make sense or sound right to me.

If I set the camera in DV apparently it will do it.

I hope I am wrong in this.

Any help or advice would be appreciated!! I have two jobs, one tonight and one next week I would like to do that.

Lots of times I record with two mics, the wireless into one channel, the shotgun into the other. I'm not sure what you're asking--recording with 2 mics or recording with one mic onto two channels, with one set lower than the other. That is also possible. But there are only two channels of audio in HDV.

Good Morning,

I was wondering if I can run the native mic off channel 1 and then another, either lavalier or shotgun off channel two.

If so do I have to set things at 12 bit, or what?

Hi Dale, you can do this on the H1 for sure, but you have to use more than 2 channels though!
The front mic (onboard) is a stereo mic and require 2 channels, so you have to connect the wireless on channel 3 or 4.

Canon H1 in HDV-mode records audio in MPEG2 (384 kbps) when using 4 channels, the sampling frequency still at 48 KHz.

Per,

Sense I went cheap, and got the h1 - A

It only has two channels so I will have to shoot with two xlr's.

I reckon I could flip the swithc to Mono, and then use channel two for any xlr mic right?

Also sense it only has two channels, it apparently does not when in HD have to be converted to 12 bit???

I understand the xl2 perfectly and I assume the h1-s is like it.

I was thrown off when there was no 12 bit for the hd in particular.

Dale, sorry that I mislead you to think that it could record in 4 channels! You didn't specify that you had the H1s model and I was not aware that it could only do 2 channel audio! My trusty 3-years-old H1 is capable of doing 4 channel audio though!

Here's some information about the MPEG-1 audio layer II format, which I understand is used in ALL camcorders recording HDV-format.
