I also have a feeling that it might depend on who you speak to over there. A few months ago I had called Canon directly concerning my XL2 that needed repairs. I have the extended MACK contract. Since I heard prior that the people over at MACK Camera just wind up sending XL2's to Canon anyway (although MACK denied that happens), I figured I'd call Canon. Well the first rep at Canon told me that he'd ship me a box to mail the camera directly to them, gave me a referance #, and everything, and just to mention with the shipping that I had the MACK contract. Well, about a day or so b4 I was going to ship it to them, I called again to ask something, and I was informed by another rep that no, I need to send it to MACK in NJ. Hmmmm..... so since I was taking a trip to visit family in NY, I decided to hand carry it in. All said and done, it was shipped by them to Canon anyway for repairs. But the point of my story is, if maybe another Rep was spoken to, the quote from the get go might have been different for Ryan, since I had two different answers about the procedure I needed to take for my repair.
