sticky focus ring xl2

Of course this waited 13 months, till my warranty was one month expired - how do they do that? (not my real question.) Yesterday while shooting a play in a hall (ie no wind and flying sand) my focus ring went from its usual smooth fluid turn to a feeling of metal grinding on metal (or sand). Still moves and focuses but the oily feel has gone (not on its entire travel but at points.) Any experience out there with this situation? Don't want to send it off for service or repair just yet as I'm mid production and can't afford to be without the camera for three weeks. Unless this is a "will get worse situation.."
