Canon XL2 mic voltage

I am just wondering what the voltage of the onboard stereo mic is. It has two jackplugs. One for power and one for the stereo signal. I like this mic a lot and would like to use it on other cameras. What would the supply voltage be to run this?

Re: Canon XL2 mic voltage

There are several past discussions related to this. Assuming it is like the XL1:

The power is 5 volts DC.
The positive supply is the tip of the 2.5 mm plug.
The ground return is the sleeve of the 3.5 mm mini phone plug.
The sleeve of the 2.5 mm jack is floating (not DC grounded, but may have a small capacator to ground)

The reason for the odd sounding split is to reduce the chance of shorting the power supply in the camcorder (or blowing an internal fuse) should someone stick something in the 2.5 mm jack on the camcorder The design dates back to the Canon's 8 mm camcorders.

Re: Canon XL2 mic voltage

Hey Anthony,

Here is a link to one of those old threads:

http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/all-thin...lvage-mic.html

In it Me and Greg Miller discuss salvaging my mic but we never did it. I think my e-mail was down at the time so I never got his communications.
