14x with WA adaptor and XL2
I was reading over old posts, and Charles Papert discusses how his prototype model .7x wide angle adaptor with the 14x manual lens vignettes slightly in the corners, so that it is only useful if you are shooting 4:3 and then letterboxing to 16:9. Here is the link to the post:
http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthrea...&threadid=8414 Based on what I know about how the XL2 derives its 16:9 footage, it doesn't seem like this same set up (but with the production model .7x adaptor for the 14x) would vignette at all with the XL2. Is this correct? Thanks. |

The production .7X adapter doesn't vignette at all. The unit used by Charles apert was an adapter made for another lens and adapted for the 14X lens. That's why he experienced some vignetting.

Jean-Philippe, so the .7X adapter is compatible with the 14X Canon lens? I didn't see this on Century's website.
Is anyone going to purchase an XL2 body only kit with a manual lens? I'd really like to hear how this holds up for making film shorts. |

Christopher,
Look here! The 72mm bayonet mount adapter will not work with the 14X. However, a 75mm clamp-on version is available for the 14x lens. All infos are in the thread I pointed to you. Hope this help,

Christopher,
I plan to make shorts with the body only kit, the 14mm lens, and the .7x WA adaptor Jean-Philippe is talking about. But, according to Zotz who I am ordering mine through, the body only kits will probably be another month or so. |

Theoretically, the adaptor should work perfectly in both 16:9 and 4:3 modes now with the XL2, which is great. Once I get the chance to prove this, I'll check with Century to see if they still have a couple more prototype adaptors around and let you guys know. It was a substantial savings over the regular price for that adaptor.

Joel, I have the same setup on order too, XL2 body only kit and 14X manual lens. Let me know when your items ship and what you think about it. We could compare notes. How much is the wide angle adapter at Zotz?
Thanks to Jean, I see that the .7X adapter is $599 at B&H Photo. Looking forward to any info you can come up with, Charles. If you find the time out of your busy schedule, I'd be very grateful. Thanks! |

Christopher,
Sounds good. I'm hoping, fingers crossed, that I'll get mine within the next month. Brian at Zotz is hoping to find out a more exact date this week. For now, I'm holding off on ordering the Wide Angle Adaptor. I want to get the camera first. I'll let you know when I get my camera. Charles, Thanks for finding out about the prototypes. With all the other expense, itwould be great to save money on that. |
