black press / tonal range

I understand that video has a much narrower tonal range than film and so must do much more "averaging" of tones.

So If I have my xl2 set to press the blacks does this mean the rest of the image will get better tones and contrast because there's less "averaging" in the darker areas that are now being dropped to black?
