Possible XL2 lemon?
Hello everyone,
I just purchased a used XL2. I noticed that there is a clicking sound coming from around the area where the lens meets the camera body. This sound occurs when I switch from the VCR mode to the camera mode. Is this normal? If not, any ideas what this could be and what kind of problem it could become? Thanks |

There is often a clicking sound that comes from the XL2 as you start it up. Not sure about the switch over from camera to vcr mode though.
That clicking sound is the variable angle prism (image stabilizer) gyros going through initialization. -gb- |

Thanks for the info Greg. The clicking sound that occurs in the switch between vcr to camera is a similar sound to the sound that occurs when the camera is starting up. I would assume that it is probably the same thing.

There are a couple of threads like that hangin' around here, if you had carefully read your manual you would've seen that it's perfectly normal :-)

Not to fuel anyone's anxiety, but I bought an XL2 that had an odd clicking sound when shifting back and forth between record and playback modes, and the playback mode went dead almost immediately....I returned it for a new model that worked.
The new one had a slight ka-chunking sound when it started up, which is the sound Greg is describing...it operated normally and was a nice camera. Moreover, it did not click when switching between operating modes. ...I just bring it up, because I think that any sound that makes you feel uncomfortable should be checked out and if folks keep responding with "that's normal," then a user might feel that there is something wrong with them for not having this knowledge of a known issue, when in fact, there are problem cameras out there. I definitely had a bum XL2. Every alien noise should be checked out... The noise I had could easily be described as clicking, but it was definitely a precursor to the thing dying... |
