Just another thought on Presets
I have tried several of the Presets that users have posted on this forum, but on the whole I have not had very good results. I still have to tweak the video colours in Premiere.
One thought that has occured to me, is that I am shooting in PAL and our colour is not the same as NTSC. Most of the presets posted seem to have originated in the US. Could this be why the results (so far) are not what I am expecting. On my XL1s I could shoot and only needed to make a minimal amount of adjustments. The XH A1 has far more potential and is a joy to use, I guess I will have to keep on experimenting. If anyone can shed some light on the Presets - with PAL, I would be most grateful. |

The reason why the results are not what you are expecting is explained in detail here:

I use the -3 clean, +6 and +12 presets from http://www.fxsupport.de/20.html and they seem to give a faithful colorreproduction on my PAL A1.

Thank you Chris, this explains a lot. I hadn't seen the post in your link prior to posting the question.
I will be experimenting, and will post some of my own PRESETs in due course. These will be optimised for PAL cameras - I presume there must be a colour difference with PAL and NTSC presets. Regards |

Preset for PAL Users
Hi everybody,
First of all I must say that I`m not a video scientist or professional. I just enjoy a lot of video and photography and mainly I rely on what my eyes capture from our world. Previously I had a JVC HD 100 and now I have a Canon A1 and I`m very happy with it. Based on Tim Dashwood settings for JVC HD 100, on what I have read on Steve Mullen book (JVC HD 100 Handbook), on Panalook preset for Canon A1 and on my eyes, I finally achieved what seems to be a good all purpose preset for PAL users. My settings are: L Gain -3Db; M Gain 0Db; H Gain 6Db Gam N KNE M BLK S PED -2 SET -1 SHP -1 HDF M DHV 0 COR 0 NR1 0 NR2 0 CMX N CGN 13 CPH -3 RGN -17 GGN -7 BGN 12 RGM 0 RBM 0 GRM 0 GBM 0 BRM 0 BGM 0 I find night shots with vivid colors and good latitude and with 6Db gain there is no noise. I hope everybody enjoy it and any suggestions are always welcome. Regards |

Thank you Jose, I will have a go with your settings. At the moment I am just shooting everything with the camera's default settings and correcting in Premiere.
I am off to Lisbon today will try when I get back. |
