New Narrative Short

Hello guys, I just started shooting a short film for my NYU application portfolio due on november. I'm used to making these short 'production diaries' for all my projects and I thought i'd share the latest episode with all of you. I hope you like it.

My first video

Hummingbird shot in high shutter speed on Vimeo

This was done on a 2002 Dell Dimension 8300 platform that I've upgraded...video card(NVidea 7000 series I believe) and upgraded to 4 gig memory along with external drives.

I've been using this video to describe to 5th graders the ruby throated hummingbird here in Minn. Done with no sound as I do the narrative live.

Truth is....

I wasn't thrilled with the windows media version of what I ended up with...windows media HD

Mpeg was mt2 and didn't give me anywhere to go....Adobe primiere elements 3.0. I have no problem upgrading here...but...

So, this necessitated a trip to my local PC/software business to see if I could buy a better PC/software pkg. for under $2,500..my hobby-teaching video budget.

So far, no luck.

So this is what I've learned...being a teacher and all.

Mac...too much $$$....and a website that is extremely vague about what I might need to get to do what I want to do.

Windows P.C. 64 bit........... with lots of warnings that my old software wouldn't work.

Take care.

What is it that you want to do exactly?

$2500 can get you a nice mac that will be more then sufficient for HDV editing if that's what you're interested in.

Hello Morgan,

Here is a P.C. system that I'm looking at.

Customize your d5000t series direct at HP Home & Home Office Store

I could pay more for a Mac. But I don't see what I would gain.

wow, these frames look very nice. Please share some of the technical info too once you put up the footage (if you don't mind) - I just got an XH-A1 a couple weeks ago myself.

btw - what's the best way to do frame grabs like this? (I'm a mac user)

I'll give you technical info now because i'm still working on editing the footage. I shot at 24f around 1/120 shutter speed, ND and I'm still using the VIVID RGB preset.

for these screen grabs i viewed the footage full screen in final cut pro (go to view, video playback, select digital cinema desktop preview, and then hit command F12 to view your playback window full screen) , and then just did command shift 4 to screen capture. worked pretty well.

High School Film Class and the XHA1 and Letus Extreme

I teach a film class to 13 students three days a week at a high school in Central Louisiana. The class has shot four short films using the XHA1 and the Letus Extreme. The films can be found at www.firstframefilms.com. The four videos are called "The Sounds of Music", "Mr. President", "Misunderstood" and "Jonathan's Last Day". The class would love feedback and your thoughts on the videos. You may leave them either here, or using the comment button under each video on the site.

I informed the class today that dvinfo.net is probably the best source to find a community of people who will help them shape their craft. As you watch the different films, please keep in mind that the oldest video (Jonathan's Last Day) was shot on the second day of class, and that the newest video (The Sounds of Music) was shot six weeks after the fact. While the students are still in a very elementary stage of learning film techniques, I think you'll find that the students are learning the tools of film quickly and that the improvement from one film to the next is observable. And frankly, I think you'll be impressed at what they can do. Thanks ahead of time for any feedback you might have for the class. The students check the website frequently and will take to heart any pointers or helps that you might have.
