Can you take an external video source and record it on the G1/A1?

A firewire copy from one HDV device to another, yes. Analog or DV sources will be recorded in DV.

Damn i was wondering this myself. Have a lot of VHS tapes to digitise and was thinking if it would record in HDV that'd be a great way to artificially enhance it to save me having to go the Ananlog Input offline encode method. DOH!

Some HDV camcorders can downconvert HD to SD, but none will upconvert SD to HD.
