As always Chris, YOU ROCK! This is great information, and after I spent even more time with the XL H1 recently, I'm very excited about these cameras!

The picture from the top with the LCD out of the way shows what appears to be a speaker grill. Could this be another first from Canon to provide built in audio monitoring other than headphones?

Actually the GL2 has a speaker grill. You made me think about it and I had to go look it up.

OK, it wouldn't be a first then. But, is this in fact a speaker grill? The Canon DV site doesn't mention it in any of the info I read.

Yup, that is a speaker grill. I need to flesh out descriptions on those pages. Click the images to make 'em big!

hands on

So Chris since you have had hands on, I am kind of shocked that you have'nt given us a pre-review type summary, with all the baited breath around here. Can you give any impressions about the camera? Lcd resolution, viewfinder res etc.. is the cam designed well, does it seem sturdy, how well does the F-Stop ring on the barrel work (does is click at each stop, can you lock it?) all the first impression kind of stuff? I asked previously in another thread about the footage, but any other thoughts on that (given the recent DVX gritty footage)? I understand if you are in some non-disclosure thingy but any details would be nice to help pass the time till Oct/Nov.

Thanks

Jack,

It would be MORE shocking to fly back and forth across "The Pond" with nothing but non-stop trade show activities in between, and still have the energy to post answers to everyone's questions before they asked them! ;-)

Chris has barely gotten his feet back on the ground in Texas. Though he must be exhausted, he is busy playing "catch up" as well as preparing a whole bunch of updated info. We must be patient just for a short while! (Ok, Chris, I think I bought you maybe 24 hours...best I can do, and it'll cost ya!)

It's nice we have a source of accurate information here. I was just surfing around and ran across camcorderinfo.com, and they have the wrong focal lengths listed for the lens on the A1/G1. they have 5.4 at the wide end when it is 4.5. The long end is wrong too, instead of 90 it's 128 or something like that.

One question needed for the FAQ (cause probably a lot of people might ask this):

How do I get 50i/60i switching in my A1/G1 and how do I switch modes in-camera after I get it?

I never thought of it, because they offered 24F in the cameras. I used 50i in the Z1u because it was easier to go to 24p that way vs. 60i.
