FCP will not recognize XHA1

I am using FC 7.0 and a Canon XHA1. Haven't used the camera recently, been using DSLR's. I have some SD footage that I want to capture but I cannot get FC to display the preview. I can control the camera via Log and Capture window but the Preview is Disabled in the Log and Capture window. I suspect that my Audio/Video settings are incorrect.

The settings are;
Sequence Preset = DV NTSC 48 khz
Capture Present = DV NTSC 48 khz
Device Control = FireWire NTSC
Video Playback = Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Main
Audio Playback = Default
I have tried many combinations of settings but no luck.

The camera is connected to my MacBook Pro 17" by a FW 400 cable via a external drive.

Your suggestions and advise is very much appreciated.

My goal is to combine some SD (4X3) footage with some ProRes (1980 x 1080) in the same project for output to the web. I have never done this so advise along these lines would also be appreciated.

Thanks much
Kent

So the camera is on the 'other side' of an external drive? Daisy-chained as it were? Ever capture via this method before?

Thanks for responding. Yes I have but not with a MacBook. I used a iMac in the past. New Macs do not have a FW 400 port.

Disconnect the external hard disk drive.
Connect the camera directly to the MBP.
Download your video to the internal MPP HD.
Disconnect the camera.
Copy the file to your external HD.
You can then work with your file using the external HD.

Search the dvinfo archive and you will find this advice to be the solution to each new thread.
When I first tried connecting as you did, sometimes it worked, sometimes it caused kernal panics.
I have not had any problems since using the method described above.

Re: FCP will not recognize XHA1

If you want to try avoiding this extra step, make sure your device control setting is Firewire Basic, not Firewire NTSC. That's the proper setting for the XH-A1.
