Time code

Can someone explain to me the Free Run feature. I'll be doing a three cam shoot soon- two A1s and a XL2. I know how to go into the menu to set it all up, just not sure I understand how it all works in post and I don't know if the XL2 has Free Run. Just turn the cams on and the time code runs all the time weather in pause or powered off but how do you line it all up with the other cams afterward.
