Ingest with new Macbook

Is there anyway to ingest from an XH-A1 into a new Macbook that only has USB? I am afraid I know the answer but hope springs eternal

Short answer is no. Dumping the firewire card was an evil thing Apple did, obviously calculated to make you spend more money on the Pro.

One thing you might try, and I don't know if it'll work but it might be worth a try: If you have or can borrow a firewire drive that also has USB...hook that up to the laptop via USB and hook up the camera to the drive via firewire. Open up FCP, or iMovie if that's all you have, and see if it'll talk to the camera.

My guess is this probably won't work but I think it's worth a try. You'd want to set your NLE to designate the drive as the capture/scratch drive first, of course.

I thought about this recently because I may get a new MacBook soon and although I edit on an FCP system at work, it would be nice to have some capability at home for days when I want to work from there. To be safe, I'll probably go with the small white MacBook which is still available and has firewire. But who knows how much longer they'll sell that model. For my needs, it's not worth the money to go with the Pro for home use.

Hi Clay,

As Bill said - not possible. But..

The firewire protocol over ethernet is part of the firewire specification. There have been a few guesses that this might be included in OS10.6, but I wouldn't count on it. If it is, there will be firewire to ethernet adapters available.

Id it doesn't work (I agree with Bill, unlikely that it will), try a Firewire Expresscard
