UV Filter For Protection?

On my DSLR's I choose not to use the uv filters as I do feel the image quality suffers slightly, and being a CPS member if I ever did have an issue, I get a loaner while my lens is quickly repaired. I have not needed to in 10+ years of being in business. (knock on wood)

I am looking at buying an XF305 and if memory is correct I did use them on my XHA1's and not my my Sony EX1r's.

Wondering what your thoughts are on a camera with a fixed lens?

I bought one for my XF300 just for protection, but since I don't like adding more glass than is necessary, I only use it when I'm likely to be filming in locations which might pose risks of lens damage such as sand/dust or water (especially seawater)

Thing is, on a DSLR, if the lens gets scratched, just change it and put another lens on, while the damaged one is out getting fixed.

Cams with a fixed lens are different, in that it would lly be a bummer to have to send in the whole cam for a week or two to repair a scratched lens. If you're busy, that down time could cost a lot of income. That is why I always use a UV filter. Cheap insurance.

The proper UV or protective filter should not interfere with picture quality.

The experts recommend a double coated UV filter.

This is what I use:B+H filter.

Stay away from clear non-coated UV filters. The cheap filters can make the picture appear as if looking through the bottom of a soda bottle.

The use of a protective filter is essential for cameras without removable lens capability. One small pebble, kicked up from the wind and "hitting" your fixed-lens will result in sending back your entire camera to CANON for a costly repair and place the camera out of service for the amount of time to have the camera fixed.

In closing, a GOOD double-coated UV filter, not only protects the camera and is a cheap insurance policy, but will also "cut-out" the environmental haze-especially in the summer.

Lou, would you mind providing a link to the particular B+H filter you use with your Canon? When I try to google B+H UV filter, I get B&H, which seems to sell Tiffen.

I think he means B&W filter from B&H. They are excellent quality, as are the Hoyas.

Schneider Optics, makes (or at least distributes) B+W filters. The B+W filters are the round screw-in type. The rectangular filters, for matte box use, are distributed under the Schneider name.

I continue to not use them on my dslr lenses but like said they can be removed.

The Canon XF100 has a 58mm diameter filter ring, so that is the size you should look for.

Ahhhh... thanks for the info and the links. I will admit, this kind of thing would be a huge struggle for me, without this kind of help. Some day I hope to repay all these favours, but of course, I first have to master so many of these details (particularly the technical details) that continue to elude me. I live in fear of paying for something that doesn't fit, or doesn't work.
