a basic question - combing

what causes "combing" and how does one control it? shooting some objects moving across the screen and the ends of the objects are showing noticeable combing. using HV30 and final cut express on a mac pro, 8G memory and vast disk.

Without a sample it's hard to say, but it could be either rolling shutter artifacts or interlacing artifacts. Do a Google search on both.
