Lens Shade
Can anyone help me out with this. I want to get a lens shade for my Xi, the problem is I dont know which one would fit my camera, I went to B&H today and they told me that the thing Xi comes with (what you screw in front of the lens) is the only lens shade. I think this is wrong since I saw photos of Dave Perry's Xi and he had a nice lens shade. Any help with this is appreciated.

Max,
Here is the lens hood I use. Oreder it and a 52 to 46 stepdown ring and your in business. The hood clamps to the 52mm side and the 46mm side screws into the Xi lens threads

Thanks for the help, that lens hood not only helps but adds a more pro look to the camera (which is always a nice thing).
Thanks again. Max Sitnikov |

Ha Ha…ok, here’s my goofy story: I was looking around on the web to find a decent lens shade. Lot’s of confusing options and some of them are very pricey. So…I stopped into Home Depot. In the plumbing section there is a wide range of plastic and rubber pipe adaptors and fittings. I brought my Xi with to make sure I could match the size. Right there I found the PERFECT fit that squeezes on over the front lens hood that comes with the camera. This makes it so you can quickly pop it off when changing lens filters.
I found a flanged black rubber adaptor that fits a larger section of plumbing to a smaller one. It actually looks very pro until you get right up close to it. Makes the camera look very impressive. I did take a hack saw and cut off about an inch and a half from the front to prevent any vignetting. There was a bezel indented around it, so that made it very easy to do a clean cutting job. The only drawback is that the thick black rubber is a little on the weighty side, but it will do its job fine when outdoors on a tripod. All in all, I got a cool black lens hood for about five bucks. The guy who helped me at the store caught on to what I was doing right away, and thought it was neat. He said he would cut me in 30/70 if we wanted to put a bunch of these on ebay and mark them up a lot as Optura Xi lens hoods. Very funny. This was about a month ago. I think I saved the label with the brand and the measurements for next time I ever get around to updating my Xi webpage…. |
