So I'm clear
It's a bad pun, but there isn't a way to turn off the lcd data so you can clear the lcd screen and just see the video?

Assuming that you're asking about the GL2, just use the Display / Data Code button found on the inside panel behind the flip-out LCD, adjacent to the backup battery cover. Details on page 38 of the owner's manual.
