Poormans shotgun mike?
Has anyone tried modifying the internal mic to change it's pick-up pattern? Maybe a tube attachment of some kind, to block sounds coming from the sides and rear?

Unfortunately, it's not that simple. For starters, the GL2's onboard mic is actually two mics configured for stereo. But even if you disabled one side it would not leave you with a directional mic. The electronics and physical design are quite different. (And, no, sticking a tube on the mic won't work, either.)
There are several good, relatively inexpensive directional mics available. Poke around in the audio forum and online.
