I think you've really hit a key point by suggesting that owners practice with their cameras.
Certainly, a professional camera operator has such opportunities throughout the working day. The hobbyist and occasional shooter has less opportunity. Nevertheless, regardless of the camera, there's just no substitute for disciplined practice using a camera's features.
