what I find incredibly frustrating is that the THM files are not transferred (or even visible) unless I use this specific program

You should be able to just drag & drop the .THM files along with their associated .MOV files from the card into a folder on your PC. You don't need any special program unless you are importing into Lightroom or some other application.
BTW The .THM file is actually a .JPG file of the first frame in the video clip & contains the regular EXIF information that the camera stores for any still photo showing date/time, lens, aperture, ISO etc |

my experience is different. unless I use Canon's software, I don't even see THM files browsing the CF card
