The JL, on the other hand, is switchable between mic and line level. Now, line level *is* specified. One should be able to find some settings on the JL and 5D2 that give easily calibrated line levels. That'll be sweet for use with a separate field mixer and recorder. The 5D2/JL with line feed would give a great sync track and a viable backup if the main recording is lost.
Thanks Jon. I am just getting started exploring the 5D/7D for video so I have not checked the workings yet.

It would seem this firmware update missed the mark a bit from a audio perspective. Not having meters on the view screen is a poor choice and not having a line input setting is another poor choice for working pros. A line input would take the heat off of needing quality preamps in a still camera and allow folks to get better sounding audio with external preamps. It is like they just do not want (or can't) to go there with this model.

Looks like we can at least set the camera with a 1 k tone level from a field mixer as a start, using 12 db marker on the levels meter. Dialing in that way, may work fine.

So you were able to upgrade your camera from someone else's firmware dump? That's cool.
