Audio Monitoring via HDMI Output

Folks like me are wanting audio monitoring in the camera, but it isn't there. However, HDMI is supposed to output both audio and video. Anyone know if Canon's implementation outputs audio via HDMI? If that's the case, one could theoretically monitor audio by extracting it from the HDMI output. Of course, you'd lose the built-in LCD view if plugging in to the HDMI out.

I haven't tried it yet, but according to page 124 of the manual, audio is *not* passed through HDMI during recording (although it is upon playback, of course).
