Eos 5Dmk2 Editing using FCE3.5 & Tripod talk! at DVinfo.net

Hi
I was wondering if anyone can tell me if you can edit the video footage from the 5dmk2 using Final cut express 3.5. I have been trying just this but every time I put a clip onto the time line and it does not matter if it is 1 frame or longer I have to render the clip before viewing it. Do I need to upgrade to version 4.0 or make the huge expense of buying Final cut studio 2.
Also does anybody know a good "hybrid" tripod head one that I can use for stills and video it needs to be fluid but also be able to turn the camera on it's side for portrait mode shooting stills. I'm a video cameraman so at the moment I'm using a Sacthler video 18p but this is to heavy and you can't use it in portrait mode without unscrewing the base plate. Mayabe I'm just after the impossible !
