Why does my remote shutter release blank out my screen?

Hey folks,
I have a Canon 60D and I was practicing some self portraits when I discovered I can't figure out how to use the remote shutter I bought. It's not wireless, it plugs right into the mini jack on the side but as soon as I do, the screen turns off. The camera shoots but I can't see the result. If I hit MENUE, nothing shows either. I have a portable HDMI monitor I use for video that works fine with video but nothing shows when I try to shoot stills. I looked in my settings but I swear, I don't see anything to make this work!

Please tell me the little thing I'm doing wrong here!
Thanks,
Art
