DFocus - thoughts?

I'm just wondering what are people's thoughts on the DFocus (follow focus) used with 550D.

I can't afford a more expensive follow focus but some say the DFocus is pretty good value considering it's price.

Does it actually help when it comes to focusing?

I'm using it without rails and its a little flimsy. I think the way it help is getting rid of bumping into the lens that would show up in the footage. I'd recommend it.

I have the D/Focus V2 , I used it with a shoulder rig, works great. the adjustable gear that comes with it works great too, (except on the Canon 50mm 1.8 due to lens focus ring design not the FF). Sure there are nicer ones out there but with careful use these do the job pretty well.

Thanks for the comments, I've ordered one from Jag35.

Gerry, In regards to using the FF with the 50mm 1.8 lens, have you tried the elastic band trick?

Yes I have, and its a crap shoot. sometimes it works long enough sometimes it don't. at least I haven't found the magic rubber band yet.

Re: DFocus - thoughts?

Hi,
I want to use this system as a zoom instead of focus device. I am thinking of either using the D/fous v4 with the hand crank attached to the D/mount rail or use the D/zoom with the rail. What do you think?
I have the canon 70D with the 28-135mm STM lens. This lens is not very smooth at zooming.

Thanks,

John Gerard
