VLC doesn't play WMVs, at least in my experience. That being said, WMV is an awful format, anyway.

why do you think it's awful- I find .wmv files to have very good quality and small file sizes.

WMV (VC-1) is one of the best playback formats available. It's truly a shame Macs don't play it well. You might want to read up a bit on the codec/container before declaring it awful.

It's odd that Quicktime doesn't play the file well, but it plays just fine in FCP, which is using Quicktime.

Funny, I have the opposite issue. QT Pro plays them back smoother than FCP. Neither are perfect, but QT comes close enough for at least a primary QC. Interestingly, video files from the 5D play with a lot more stuttering, though the bitrates are comparable. Same system, same file format (seemingly) but the T2i plays better.

One very good player I use since I abandoned VLC, is Media Player Classic. But because I am on W7 Ultimate it has the limitation for the moment not being able to play QT files. At 32bit versions however it can play any QT file.
