Focus assist tool ?
I find i don't really need an expensive focus assist for the 7D. All I really need is a nice handle for the focus ring. A 3 inch stainless steel hose clamp works just fine for $1.79, but I don't like using a metal band around the lens. The same thing made of fabric or plastic would fill the bill nicely. Anyone know where one could buy such a thing?

Well I've seen a picture somewhere of someone using a plastic cable tie(s). I think the idea (there) was that the "sticking out tip" gives a pointer which easily lets you know exactly what position the lens focus ring is in (or maybe the zoom).
Now, some cable ties are quite big/thick and chunky - they come in all sizes/colours - and might work well in providing a "lump" (i.e. handle) on the ring with the ratchet part (just cut the excess length of the strap to what you want after it is attached). Some cable ties lock on (and would need cutting of the strap to free from the lens, if required...but this risks damaging your expensive lens!), others have a simple release catch on the "ratchet lump part" that the strap part feeds through to make them reusable/adjustable. Much better! Not tried it myself yet...just some ideas! I like to keep things simple, compact (and cheap) too!
