Tokina 11-16mm Focus Issues
Lens arrived from B&H. Was really looking forward to it, but must have got a dud. Compared to my 18-135mm kit lens, it wasn't nearly as sharp on the wide end. Just can't get it to do a sharp focus. If I was dealing with one of my 2/3 B4 Broadcast lenses, I'd just dial in the backfocus, but not possible here. And yes I tried the full range of F stop & ISO.
I googled Focus Issues, and found a bunch of matches. Some batches earlier this year had a missing spacer. But this was the latest batch to B&H, so the problem must be ongoing. Reluctant to return for same replacement - if I get another with the same issue, I'm not so sure B&H will appreciate a second return. Any suggestions for alternate? 10-22mm, or 17-40mm L? Something with at least F2.8 is preferable. |

I think you got a dud, that lens is pretty well reviewed and is supposed to be pretty sharp. I have the 12-24mm Tokina and it is razor sharp, definitely amongst my sharpest Nikons. I have the Canon 17-40 f4 L for my 5D MKII and it seems pretty sharp as well but wouldn't be wide enough for your 7D.
If I buy the 7D, I will probably get that same lens. Dan |
