Blackmagic 4K camera tests

I just know i'm going to have a love/hate relationship with this camera. Loving the image, hating the form factor. But that's just me.

Here's early footage i just just the past few days. More will come, writeups to be posted at
Rolling review of the Blackmagic 4K camera. Tests galore

Re: Blackmagic 4K camera tests

Hey Darren,
Good shooting. Too bad the recent weather in NYC has been so ugly.Just looking at it makes me think I would have been much happier if they had delivered this camera in August. On my laptop in Vimeo I am not seeing the 4K advantage although the global shutter seems to be apparent. I am thinking about getting some breakfast for some reason. I agree the ergonomics are poor but most of these large sensor cameras are the same until you get up to the F5 range.

Unless I'm mistaken, Vimeo maxes out at 720P meaning UHD (3840 x 2160) has 9 times as many pixels as Vimeo. That is a LOT of downscaling...

Re: Blackmagic 4K camera tests

That's too bad that the low light noise is high. In all other aspects except extreme high light, (The purple sun) it's pretty good. Still doesn't have 1080p60 like the GH4 though.

Re: Blackmagic 4K camera tests

There seems to be some grabbing/stepping motion when the camera is panning during the breakfast footage. Is there some sort of stabilisation that was not switched off when shooting from a tripod?

Re: Blackmagic 4K camera tests

I need to upload a better copy but in 1080. That file is a 10mbit wmv... That was the max setting. Im actually surprised it doesn't look like crap

Re: Blackmagic 4K camera tests

Hey Darren,
I always blame Vimeo for certain kinds of problems that I see in footage. Smooth pans that are jumpy etc. The perceived sharpness question sometimes is not just pixels but the way the video is processed, lens being used etc. Not sure I have the viewing set up which will reveal advantages of 4K over 1080 HD at my disposal. Still seems like a useful camera if it is reliable and you like the lenses you have for it. At some point it will be fun to test some 4k cameras against each other to see how they are handling things and at what price.

Re: Blackmagic 4K camera tests

Hey Darren,
Thanks for the invite. Sorry I didn't make it.Of course Adorama is a few blocks from my apartment. I didn't check in with DVInfo Net in time. Maybe next time. I did see the Diamond Brothers at Mopictive Meeting at Abel a few weeks ago.

Re: Blackmagic 4K camera tests

I don't think you can blame Vimeo for the jumpiness in the panning. Movement within the shots is very smooth (such as vehicle flow in the traffic etc).

Vimeo supports 1080p. However, if you upload UHD file and enable the download option, others can download the original file you upload.

Re: Blackmagic 4K camera tests

Indeed, vimeo has yet to implement higher than 1080 playback, and even just to get 1080, you have to wait till the video is uploaded, and processed, and then go in and select to upgrade it to 1080.

doing my 'karina' tests. i do like the color, and toying with the iso options does tell a story about this fixed pattern noise....

Re: Blackmagic 4K camera tests

Thanks for posting these Darren, and thanks to Noa for posting the extra video of the boats etc. The extra dynamic range from the pocket camera in the boat window was surprising, but I guess that's what the extra stop does for you. The moiré difference on the sign was pretty telling too. 4K is going to make these things easier to shoot, but now we need decent downscaling algorithms in the NLEs so that aliasing doesn't trash it later on when going to 1080p.
