Thoughts on tonight's 24 (first two hours): spoilers for those who haven't seen it

SPOILERS!

I've seen maybe one or two episodes of 24, but my friend got me really into it. So I tuned in and was blown away. I like that Jack's a broken man, that he was messed up pretty bad for almost 2 years by the Chinese.

But I do like that he's a hero, something not really seen in TV or movies these days. Well, at least TV. I guess he's a non-superhero hero.

Thoughts?

I thought the episodes were incredible! I like how we see a different Jack, a broken Jack. This is definitely one of the most political and controversial season so far and I love it!

He may have been broken but he snapped out of it pretty fast. He must have popped some Viagra.

I didn't know he was a vampire, and I've never seen anyone get stabbed in the knee before...

episode thoughts

I love 24. However, as good as these episodes were, the continuity should have been adjusted. If I was producing, I would have either left Jack with the deshoveled look for a while longer, or made his transfer to Fayed later in the episode. there was just no way he is getting a haircut and shave in 8 minutes. The kid's storyline, and FBI search could easily have been introduced earlier in the episode, just to add some buffer between things
and keep the timing more realisitc. So far Season 5 Premiere >>> S6.

Yeah, and the US prez was a vampire hunter on Buffy. Did you know Jack's uncle started the NDP?

Finally...L.A. got nuked. I wonder if CTU went up with it?

So what did you all think of the whole thing with Curtis? Personally I knew something was going to happen when Curtis said "We'll see about that." or whatever it was. I thought it was a very powerful scene, but at the same time Curtis's actions seemed very out of character for him, he was always very by the book, and IIRC in Season 5 didn't he try to convince Jack not to kill Henderson at one point? (when their roles was reversed) Anyways just my $0.24

The end of part 4, with Curtis, saw my wife screaming out. The ending wasn't too good for her, either. So, she'll stick with the guilty pleasure stuff.

Curtis' death, just like Ryan Chapelle's death in Season 3, didn't seem to flow, in my opinion. It was pretty out of character for Curtis. Don't get me started on Chapelle's death either. I felt it was too formulaic, and like they just decided one day "Hey, we killed George Mason off last season, let's kill off his successor in another sacrificial fashion." Anyway, a bit off topic. Curtis getting killed by Jack served a purpose, but I just thought it wasn't very Curtis-like to do what he did.

Poor Curtis will be back working in Daddy's New Westminster (Vancouver area) barber shop or on a new TV show.

It's really hard to say what is in character for someone who watched his fellow soldiers beheaded by someone on television. That is definitely something you can keep in check, but only to a point. It was actually not unlike Jack for him to decide that regardless of what the president said, he knew what needed to be done. Regardless of what makes sense for curtis, I thought it was a great thing to add for Jack. Ouch.

The continuity questions are always there. The thing that continues to kill me about the show is that everything takes 20 minutes or less to get to, and often it is only 10. And this is in LA! From the terrorist holding cell, to a remote street where the bus is taken out, back to the terrorist warehouse all in one hour. Say what you want about a field agent being on the phone with the president, but going three places in one hour in LA is unrealistic :).

The only thing that seemed out of line to me was how quickly Jack went from not speaking for 2 years while in a Chinese prison to entering coordinates on a Nextel phone that he found in a parked car...

At least his car jacking skills hadn't atrophied while in China.
