Using HD-50 Deck

Is it possible to digitize HDV 720/30 as DV footage through firewire on the HD-50 deck in Avid Express?

No. The deck will NOT downconvert through FW, only component and composite outputs. I guess also S-Video...never tried that.

Thanks. I notice the deck wil also playback 1080i. Can I do that through componet, or composite into a 1080i project in Avid Express Pro? I know the footage won't be real 1080i footage, but it seems like an acceptable workflow...if it works.

There is no way for AXP to accept HD through component. Mojo is only SD and there is no other way of getting component video in. The next (big) step is to use Adrenaline with DNXcel board. A pricey proposition.

I thought Mojo would work with HD? Here's their product description from the Avid site:

Compact enough to take on location yet powerful enough to serve as the core of a professional video-editing suite, Avid Mojo SDI and Avid Mojo hardware connect to both laptop and desktop systems, both Mac and PC, with a single IEEE-1394 (FireWire) cable. Unlike other add-on hardware, they let you capture audio or video while also providing output of the same source, so you can monitor what you're capturing, including watching video on a client monitor while recording voiceover – impossible with hardware from other manufacturers. In addition, Avid Mojo and Avid Mojo SDI let you monitor and output HD timelines in SD with real-time down-convert.

Yeah, I know Don. It's misleading. It actually says: "In addition, Avid Mojo and Avid Mojo SDI let you monitor and output HD timelines in SD with real-time down-convert." MONITOR, not capture. The only way for HDV to get into AXP is via FW. In fact, when capturing you have to disconnect Mojo and connect your deck/camera directly to the computer FW bus. AFTER that you may reconnect your MOJO and IF and ONLY IF you are working with INTERLACED HDV (1080i HDV - not 720p), you could monitor a single filed downconverted SD video via a Mojo box. The only part of this I am not sure about is the 'single-field', in fact it might be a full DV but there is no capture of HD via Mojo, period.
