Newbie Question..How to import an MXF at DVinfo.net

I'm trying to import an MXF into Media Composer. If I choose import it gives me an error message "you cannot import this file into this bin" or something like that.
How do people import media into a new project?

I tried importing to a new bin. Also, I would like to import the MXF without changing its codec etc. Is this possible?

I'm used to FCP where there's about 3 different ways you can import media.
