DVR to Mac Book Pro

What is the easiest way to transfer video files from the Cable company's Motorola DVR (has firewire jack on the front) to my Mac Book Pro so I can edit them and have fun in iMovie and Final Cut Express?

Which software program is best? Or do I need to purchase an external product (from Elgato etc) to do this?

Thanks.
