Sony HDR-SR1 and FCP

I have been working on a graffiti documentary the past month or so. I have been testing out some time lapse shots using my HDR-SR1. My problem is that FCP only allows me to import the files in Prores or the Intermediate Codec and these file sizes are astronomically larger than they are on the camera. What I need to know is if there is a way to edit these files while maintaing quality and file size. I have looked around and there does not seem to be an official AVCHD codec for FCP. Any ideas on how to handle this without having such massive files? Or am I just going to have to record in SD?
