The veil of mystery surrounding Microsoft's secretive Origami portable device lifted just a little on Thursday after the firm updated the project's cryptic Web site, hinting that all would be revealed on March 9.

Origami is the art of paperfolding. Though it is a Japanese word (oru means "to fold" and kami means "paper"), origami's origins may date as far back to ancient
China where paper was invented circa 95 B.C.

Origami is often used without attention to its meaning whenever companies wish to embue their products with an exotic, mysterious, trendy air. Also, the thousand crane folding tradition has a spiritual, peace-loving cachet - all of which I'm sure has not gone unnoticed by Microsoft :-))

Citing people close to the two companies, the Times said the device would be a smaller, lighter version of tablet personal computers that allow users to enter text with a digital pen and are tailored for consumer entertainment such as playing music or movies.

The new models would have roughly 8-inch (20.3 cm) screens and sell for about $1,000 each, depending on the functions, the report said. Later versions may be smaller, with 4-inch screens.

Interesting how some of those have 16:9 screens and others are 4:3....
