When will prosumers see a sub $5,000 camcorder that has a full frame 35mm cmos sensor? Which company will be the first?

I don't think that anyone is able to answer that question, but I'd
say that this is at least 5 - 10 years away from a known camera
company. A smaller one might start things, but I wouldn't get my
hopes up.

Um...are there any full 35mm frame cmos camcorders other than the Dalsa?

Its just so hard to do I think because that size...though physically small...in terms of cmos chips is enormous. You need new die sizes, and since chips are often defective, one defective chip of this size is like having 4 defective normal sized chips. Not to mention out of a normal sized 12 inch (or is it 10inch) wafer...you aren't going to get that many chips out of them. That wafer cost is basically fixed...so the smaller they make a chip..the more chips they can get out of a wafer...thus cheaper cameras have smaller chips.

The better question might be when we will we see a sub $50,000 camera with a 35mm cmos chip.

Sure, you'll probably find a Dalsa on Ebay for less than $5,000....

5-10 years is like a long long short time, if you know what I mean. The cam-market shou dlhave introduced a 35-mm model in 2003 for 5000 dollar/euros, but they didn't. Evrybody is afraid. In the meanwhile ahtlona and intel lower their prices and produce smaller chips. grrrrrrrrr

The Arri D-20 has a 35mm CMOS. Is the chip made by Dalsa?

Also Panavision has an Academy size chip.

I know that 35mm sized chips are 6-12megapixels..too bad someone has not figured out how to take pixel 'chunks' from that HUGE data amount and get 1080p from that image! that would ROCK..I will look at doing this with our camera if I can find a 35mm sized cmos chip with cameralink output...anyone know of one?
