Lenses and sharpness

I am finding some really interesting things about lenses while testing my friends' Letus35A and some FD canons.

The 1.8 50mm Canon has the sharpess, cleanest image
The 1.4 50mm Canon - not sure if it is the razor sharp DOF, but not the sharpest compared to the 1.8
2.8 28mm Kitstar - so-so

I was using a sheet with writing on it. Now, part of the problem is that I am using a condenser to get close enough to the GG without the vignetting. This could be causing some of the softening. But besides that I would have thought the 1.4 would yield the best results.
