My Sennheiser ME 102 lav mic developed a buzz. I didn't notice it yesterday. Seems to be constant. Another mic worked fine with the base part, so I guess it's the screw in element or in the wire.

Where can I get this fixed?

I do those types of repairs myself. If Sennheiser won't do it at a reasonable price, you might look for a local TV/Electronics repair shop that'll be willing to do it.

Actually, according to the cable it's an MKE 102. The very tiny lettering on the mic itself seems to be ME 102.

Anyways, I called Sennheiser and took it apart. It seems a previous owner put some shrink tape over a cut in the plastic insulation, which covered up a semi shredded ground shielding wire. Apparently there is another open in the ground somewhere, according to my ohmmeter.

Someone may have rolled over it with a chair, which is a common problem, according to the tech.

So for about $45.00 I can get a new pigtail, or pay about $77 for a new assembly that doesn't require soldering. Or I could splice in a new wire, but that seems like another Mickey Mouse repair (in the words of a former shop teacher) that I don't need.

Just an FYI: The tech also said that the pigtail (one end has the female mic receptacle threads) has a steel wire inside, which makes it stronger. That only applies to the straight cable, as compared to the right angle cable, which has copper ground shielding.

Nino was just telling me last week that one needs to be careful with this stuff...
