MMC and MTC are not the same as SMPTE. You can generate SMPTE from a MIDI device being fed MTC, and vice versa. MTC and SMPTE are both absolute time references, but carried differently.
Timecode sucks. Too many references, too many standards, too few easy outs. Especially today.
