The "ears" on the side are for a shoulder strap - almost as good as mounting on thhe bottom of the camera. Another ingenious solution is to clamp a bracket to a tripod leg and mount the mixpre with velcro

If you camera has line level inputs, the Mix Pre is a good choice, I agree with Steve.
