The flip side of that is that no one can react and move a fader as fast or reliably as a compressor operates.

+11 Comp/Limiters cannot anticipate when a person is going speak, I have used auto-mixers, but they ain't perfect either |

Now there's an interesting concept: an auto-mixer with enough latency that it could look ahead and anticipate when someone starts speaking. Obviously not for PA or other live use.
