While I was never trusted the quality of some of their connectors and merchandise, it was a good resource in a pinch. If one of these stores is still open in your area, there are significant discounts available. I picked up some solder, solder tips, audio and power connectors, XLR gender benders and lav windscreens for 50-70% off.

I am also sad to see them go. I've certainly spent a ton of time and bought many hundreds of bits and pieces there over the last 45 years, (and I just turned 52 the other day!)

My father (a mechanical engineer) and I put together one of their teaching kits for a "light-beam burglar alarm" when I was very young. We were easily fascinated in those days it seems compared to the technology of today... I thought it was the coolest thing ever! haha.

In the UK we had Radio Shack in the 60's and 70's which was then re-branded Tandy in the 80's and they all closed down but we now have Maplins, they are the phoenix that has risen from the flames and has some very good stores and a great on-line store too: Maplin | Maplin - The Electronics Specialist | Order Online for Fast Delivery

"Sprint announced its intentions to co-brand 1,750 RadioShack stores as part of RadioShack's Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in early February. The Overland Park-based carrier will operate a store within a RadioShack store, the company said, and will occupy about a third of the retail space in locations it selects throughout the United States. Sprint has yet to reveal where it plans to set up the locations.

Hedge fund Standard General LP offered $20 million for rights to the RadioShack name, The Wall Street Journal reports. The fund also has made an initial bid of $200 million for about 2,000 of the retailer's stores in a separate auction.

Along with perplexing retail analysts, Sprint's co-branding idea raises questions about how the store will operate and what products Sprint will offer there.

Sprint in the past has said it's planning to offer more electronics aside from phones, particularly in gaming and toys. Mike Werth, director of Sprint's product accessories, previously said that toys and gaming were a great fit for the carrier and a natural evolution for its product portfolio."
